I will resign: Tsvangirai

Mr Tsvangirai said the party had learnt a lot while working with Zanu-PF adding that had given him confidence that he could run the country.

He said MDC-T had no experience and would have messed up by going straight into power without the stewardship of Zanu-PF.

“I want to thank God for the part he has taken us through. God has a purpose for everything. He did not allow us to go straight into power, but allowed us to go through an apprenticeship course where we have been taught how to rule and know where the keys to govern the country are found. Now with this wholesome knowledge there is nothing that can stop us from ruling. It would have been chaos fighting each other if we had gone straight into power but God had a plan,” he said.

Mr Tsvangirai said Zanu-PF was a strong party with a huge following but urged the party supporters to soldier on and work on election-winning strategies.

He said Zanu-PF could only be defeated if the party shunned divisions and forged a united front.

“We have two issues that have prohibited us from taking over, that of the fear of defeat and the fear of ruling. We should, however, have to take courage from the Biblical story of David and Goliath.

“Fearsome as he was, David managed to defeat the giant Goliath and this is the spirit which we should have,” he said.

Mr Tsvangirai appealed for unity within the party and said the divisions rocking the party would not take it anywhere.

He launched a scathing attack on Gweru Mayor, Councillor Tedious Chimombe, who announced his defection to another party this week describing him as a lost son who would return back home.

“I learnt from newspapers that the Gweru Mayor, Chimombe, has left the party and formed his party with others and I wondered. Ndiwo mashavika aya ekuteura chirongo wasvika. We are a principled party, we should not be afraid of firing or dismissing corrupt councillors because they will form other political parties. If I get in government, I will be taking close scrutiny on the ministers and would be firing everyone who under- performs.

“We should not be afraid of firing councillors who are corrupt. I know those who went away will come back home but let them go if they so wish, we are a people’s project and we will move forward,” he said.

Mayor Chimombe and six other Gweru councillors defected from the MDC-T and joined a newly formed party, United Movement for Democracy (UMD), allegedly led by self-exiled business tycoon, Mr Mutumwa Mawere.

Meanwhile, Clr Chimombe said the attack on him by Mr Tsvangirai was a mere indication that the MDC-T leader was running scared of his waning support base.

He said Mr Tsvangirai has failed to deliver and should have stepped down as the party leader long back.

“Tsvangirai is like the biblical Moses who failed to deliver people to the promised land, Canaan and his attack on my person is a clear indication that the people are beginning to realise that he is not the saviour. The people of Zimbabwe are now beginning to realise that they will not taste the honey and milk in Canaan if they continue to follow him,” he said.
