ICZ donates five fire tenders

The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has donated five fire tenders to the Harare City Council as part of the company’s contribution to the safety and preservation of property in the capital.The vehicles are expected to arrive in the country next month.

Harare city spokesperson Mr Leslie Gwindi said the donation comes after the ICZ realised that most insured buildings had been damaged by fire.

“We advised the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe that in order to avoid heavy losses through insurance claims, the council could contribute to the community by equipping the fire brigade,” said Mr Gwindi.

He said the donation was made after the Fire Department asked the executive board of the ICZ to assist with equipment.

Council, Mr Gwindi said, had since raised US$10 500 for duty and travel costs for council officials who will drive the fire tenders from Namibia to Harare.

He said the fire tenders would be used at the Kuwadzana and Waterfalls Fire Stations, which currently do not have fire tenders.

Last year businessman Mr Peter Lobel donated two fire tenders to the city.

He has also pledged to assist council with shipping of the vehicles from the United Kingdom to Walvis Bay in Namibia.

The city of Harare will now have 12 functioning fire tender vehicles out of an initial fleet of 17.
