The inaugural Arts, Sports and Language (ASPOL) competition that was recently held at Prince Edward School was a success as it enabled identification of raw talent, the organisers have said.
The competition is aimed at identifying and nurturing talent.
The event was organised by Kindercare Zimbabwe, and ran under the theme “Children making the World a Better Place”.
Targeting children at primary school level, the event was marked by capacity building workshops, as well as poetry, dancing, singing and spelling competitions.
ASPOL director, Dr Faith Nyamukapa, said the programme was aimed at inculcating in children values that would help in addressing challenges facing communities in future, while nurturing their talent at a tender age.
“These competitions also allow them to raise awareness on challenges facing communities and how they can be addressed. It’s all about catching them young to make the world a better place,” she said.
Dr Nyamukapa added that the event was in line with Government’s vision of leaving no one behind, and the new curriculum endorsed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
“We are supporting the updated version of the curriculum by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, which has embraced Family and Heritage Studies; Information and Communications Technology; and Music.
“Covid-19 disintegrated systems in the education sector and family setups. So, we are trying to remove idleness among children, laziness, lack of interest in education, drugs and other forms of abuse since children learn fast from participation and observation,’’ she said.
The initiative was also meant to help teachers assess their level of teaching skills, Dr Nyamukapa added.
