A TRAGIC mining accident claimed the life of 22-year-old Sixpence Prince at Sinamon Mine in Penhalonga midnight of July 28.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, and said Prince was alone in the shaft and attempted to exit using a winch, a method he was reportedly familiar with.
He said colleagues, Tinashe Nyabadza (25) and Zebedia Chikoti (30) were assisting in pulling Prince up when he suddenly lost balance and fell back into the 32-metre-deep shaft.
“The incident was reported to ZRP Penhalonga, who attended the scene and initiated inquiries,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said.
He said investigations indicate that Prince died on the spot due to severe head injuries and a fractured arm.
His body was conveyed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Police have launched further investigations to determine the exact circumstances leading to the fatal incident.
