Illegal money changer robbed at gunpoint

A 33-year-old illegal money changer from Pelandaba suburb in Bulawayo was on Sunday robbed of cash amounting to US$4 000 and ZAR60 000 at gunpoint while parked outside a fast food outlet.

The victim, who operates from the popular Tredgold area was seated in his white Nissan Note around 6:45PM at corner 12th Avenue and Fife Street, waiting for his order when he was approached by three unidentified men.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the incident.

“The complainant was seated in his vehicle when three unknown men approached. One attempted to open the driver’s door, which was locked from inside,” she said. “Another then used a metal object to smash the front passenger window before firing four shots at the victim, injuring him on the right palm.

“The complainant fled, leaving behind a black bag containing the cash,” said Insp Msebele.
The suspects then took the bag and casually walked away, showing no signs of urgency or fear, despite the brazen nature of the crime.

“This robbery appears to have been well-executed and deliberate. The suspects were not masked and showed no hesitation in using firearms, suggesting a level of confidence and experience in such criminal acts,” said the victim in an interview.

Following the ordeal, the injured victim made his way to Bulawayo Central Police Station, where he reported the incident and was referred to a hospital for medical attention.

Speaking to Chronicle, the victim said he was still traumatised by the attack and struggling to come to terms with what had happened.

“I was traumatised when I realised I was being robbed. I’m still in disbelief that it really happened,” he said.
The man, who relies entirely on the money-changing trade for survival, said the stolen cash represented his entire working capital.

“As we all know, money is our capital in this hustle. They destroyed my entire investment. I’m stuck now, with nowhere to start from. But only God knows,” he added, tears streaming down his cheeks.

The incident has sparked growing concern among Bulawayo’s informal currency dealers, known locally as Osiphatheleni, who believe such robberies are being orchestrated by people with inside information.

“There’s a strong chance these robbers are connected to people within our WhatsApp groups, where we share information about available foreign currency stocks,” said one money changer who requested anonymity.

Other dealers claim this is the third similar incident in as many days, suggesting a targeted spree against illegal currency traders.

“This is the third case in three consecutive days involving money changers. We’re clearly being targeted,” said another visibly distressed dealer.

Insp Msebele urged the public to exercise caution and avoid carrying large sums of cash.
Meanwhile, the police have appealed to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact their nearest police station.
