‘I’m not bossy – I’m the boss!’

BEYONCEWhen a young boy takes control of others in his community, he’s called a born “leader”. When a girl does the same thing, she’s often called “bossy”. “Girls are less interested in leadership than boys because they worry about being called ‘bossy’,’ Beyonce admits in a new public service announcement, in which she appears alongside fellows entertainers Jennifer Garner and Jane Lynch and Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg.

Lending their star power to The Girl Scouts of the USA and Leanin.org, Beyonce and her fellow independent women teamed up with Lifetime television for the PSA, which points out how girls are discouraged from leadership roles because of name-calling and biased labelling.

In the short clip, which encourages everyone to sign a petition to ban the five-letter word at banbossy.com, a sassy Beyonce declares: “I’m not bossy- I’m the boss!”
Actress Jennifer Garner, the mother of two young girls and a son, whole-heartedly agrees.

“Being labelled something matters,” declared the “13 Going On 30 star”.

“I think the word bossy is just a squasher,’ “Glee” star Jane Lynch said.

Besides entertainment celebrities, the girl-power campaign also features Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg – who founded LeanIn.org – as well as former US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and designer Diane von Fustenberg.

“We need to recognise the many ways we systematically discourage leadership in girls from a young age – and instead, we need to encourage them, to take more active roles” said Sandberg.

“So the next time you have the urge to call your little girl bossy?

“Take a deep breath and praise her leadership skills instead.”

Rice tells girls “there are no limits on your horizon,” while von Furstenberg challenges girls to “dare to be you.”- Daily Mail.
