SONGBIRD Feli Nandi says she is still learning the trade despite hitting a purple patch.
After her success at the ZIMA 23 awards ceremony, where she bagged two gongs – Best Female Artist and Best Alternative – she still remains humble and focused.
Now in her early 30s, the diva – real name Felistus Chipendo – has been in the game for years as a backing vocalist for a number of musicians.
Although she rose to prominence as Ashton “Mbeu” Nyahora’s backing vocalist, her solo career is now paying off.
Buoyed by the success of her debut album titled Izwi, Feli Nandi’s appeal has been growing with each passing day.
She could be the answer to the void left by some late female artists like Chiwoniso Maraire.
In an interview with H-Metro, the singer, who doubles up as a fashion designer, believes she is on the right path.
“I was a back-up session musician for many bands before going solo,” she said.
“I felt I had managed to get the experience I needed to go solo, I am still learning but so far so good.
“We won’t stop learning and sharpening our skills as a band.”
She has vowed to contain the pressure and make an impression.
“A lot has changed, particularly the work schedule, which has become more demanding, and there is more pressure to deliver.
“To date, I have one album titled Izwi, and a number of singles, which are available on my YouTube channel,” she said.
She conceded there were many challenges she faces in her work.
“Challenges are many but working as a woman, in a male-dominated industry, has been the hardest.
“As a way of balancing my work, I just stick to an organised daily routine and also work with an amazing team.”
Feli Nandi has been holding a series of sold out gigs in the capital.
She has also become a hit at corporate events.
