POPULAR Zimdancehall chanter turned musician DJ Smiley said he is still the best in the business despite the rise in competition from emerging dancehall chanters in the country.
Smiley who is part of the dancehall group Legendary Sound and popularly known for his Usadarooo chant on radio and in the dancehall circles, in 2013 turned to become a dancehall artiste after having set off his career in the genre as a DJ.
Legendary Sound comprises DJs from Harare’s popular dancehall club, the Red Fox.
The dancehall chanter who is set to perform tomorrow (Saturday) in Mutare at the recently re-opened Gullivers Club on Tuesday said he is still the best in the business.
There has been growing competition of Zimdancehall chanters with the likes of Zi-Judgement Yard of DJ Flevah and Etherton as well as the new splinter Zi-Dancehall Empire of Abisha Palmer and DJ 2 Bad, being among those highly rated in the game.
DJ Smiley who was last in Mutare last year said he is set to prove to his local fans that he is still the best in business.
“It had been a while since I performed in Mutare and I know a lot has been happening in the dancehall circle but I am still the best in the business and will prove it on Saturday in Mutare,” said the dancehall chanter.
DJ Smiley who hosts Power FM’s Dance Ignition Party every Thursday and Friday from 9pm to 12 midnight said he fell in love with dancehall music after listening to the Jamaican reggae icon, Shabba Ranks, back in the early 1990s.
In 2000, he moved to the United Kingdom where he stayed for five years and was in constant touch with Jamaicans living there. When he returned home in 2009, he applied for a job as a DJ at Power FM and his unique hoarse voice and innovative chants was a hit from onset.
