BULAWAYO’S winter nights have always been synonymous with the glow of the imbawula – the humble fire brazier around which families, neighbours and friends gather to share stories, laughter and warmth against the season’s biting cold.
Now, that familiar symbol of togetherness is being transformed into a vibrant celebration of arts, culture and community through the inaugural Imbawula Experience, set to take place in Bulawayo on July 11.
The event is the brainchild of artiste manager, event promoter and hip-hop advocate Michelle Banda, popularly known as Star Michy, in partnership with musician Noluntu J. It aims to create a unique winter gathering that fuses live music, fashion, food and creative expression around the symbolic warmth of an imbawula.

As temperatures continue to drop across the country, organisers believe the timing is ideal for an event that not only embraces the winter season, but also shines a spotlight on Bulawayo’s thriving creative industry.
Speaking about the concept behind the event, Star Michy said the Imbawula Experience is designed to offer more than conventional entertainment.
“The Imbawula Experience is a winter flame-up taking place on 11 July in Bulawayo. The event will blend live music, DJ sets, food and fashion stalls around a central fire theme, celebrating Bulawayo’s creative scene during winter. The event is supported by the British Council and the Embassy of Switzerland,” she said.
Beyond entertainment, the concept draws inspiration from a long-standing African tradition. Historically, fireside gatherings served as communal spaces where stories were told, wisdom was shared and cultural values were passed from one generation to the next. Music, dance and conversation formed an integral part of these gatherings, fostering a sense of belonging and social cohesion.
The Imbawula Experience seeks to recreate that spirit in a contemporary setting, using music, fashion and creative expression as modern-day forms of storytelling.
By placing the imbawula at the centre of the experience, organisers hope to create a welcoming atmosphere where people from different backgrounds can connect, celebrate and engage with Bulawayo’s diverse creative community. – Follow on X: @MbuleloMpofu
