Imbizo Barracks hosts Sports Gala

THE Fox Company recruits were triumphant in the Intake 33A/01/ 17 recently staged Sports Week which was held last week at Imbizo Barracks Recruit Training Depot.

Fox Company were victors in the sports week after attaining maximum points from both military sporting disciplines and the traditional ones. The main aim of the sports week was to introduce the recruits into another fundamental ingredient to military training which is team work.

Among the sporting codes contested at the sports gala were volleyball, netball, basketball, soccer and athletics. The competitions also included military games such as shooting, log race, marching and assault course.

Colonel Tapiwanashe Chikohora, who was the guest of honour at the sports gala said “A healthy body carries a healthy mind and sport plays an important role in our organisation’s quest of keeping a physically fit force and keeping a soldier of good shape,’’.

In football Bravo Company beat Charlie Company 1-0 in the final courtesy of a Stanley Siziba first half strike. Alpha Company emerged victorious in volleyball and Bravo Company came first in netball, while Charlie Company clinched the title in basketball.

Echo Company lifted the trophy in athletics and also came first place in boxing. Fox Company also won in the tug of war competition.

The winning teams received accolades and cash prices courtesy of Baker’s Inn, Moonlight Funeral Services, Doves Funeral Services, FBC Bank and Agribank.

“The week-long games were designed to create a relaxed environment where recruits will express their individuality, while showcasing their talents through various disciplines”, said Chikohora. — j_@sihwa
