THE International Monetary Fund has commended Government for progress made in improving governance and transparency in the economy, pledging its support in ensuring the achievement of the country’s development  goals.

This was said by the IMF’s Country Representative, Dr Daniel Gurara, after paying a courtesy call on Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, at his offices.

The IMF’s commendation comes after the Government and the multilateral lender agreed last month to implement a 10-month non-financing Staff Monitored Programme (SMP).

The Government has implemented a variety of measures that have stabilised prices and drastically reduced currency volatility.

“As you know, Parliament is very active in following the Auditor-General’s report, and the (portfolio) committees here, they also do their job in terms of evaluating those reports. So, Parliament is very active and very strong in that context. But in general, our role is mostly on economic governance, public financial management and transparency, and from that angle, we have seen very good progress so far.

“We discussed overall what the role of the IMF is in Zimbabwe, mostly now because our engagement is in terms of the SMP – how we can work together to achieve the goals of the SMP,” Dr Gurara said.

In his brief remarks, Adv Mudenda also said they discussed Parliament’s role in ensuring transparency in the management of national resources.

“We also discussed how Parliament is committing its role in terms of ensuring that there is prudential housekeeping of the national purse,” he said.
