A CAR import agent is in the dock after duping several clients of thousands of dollars in a fake vehicle importation scheme that left his victims stranded and carless.
The accused, Tanaka Chigwagwana (24), was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court on five counts of fraud after promising to import Japanese cars that never arrived.
He is due for sentencing soon.
The smooth-talking fraudster lured his victims with offers of affordable, “hassle-free” car imports from Japan, claiming he could deliver vehicles such as:
• Toyota Corolla Fielder – US$6 330
• Nissan NV350 – US$6 919
• Nissan AD Van – US$3 800
• Honda Shuttle – US$7 600
• Toyota Vitz – US$3 300
Investigators revealed that after collecting the initial deposits, Chigwagwana would demand extra money for alleged duty payments or “vehicles stuck at Dar es Salaam port.” He then spun a web of lies about customs delays, but never delivered a single car.
The CID Vehicle Theft Squad later traced one of the cars Chigwagwana had “sold” and discovered it was registered under a third party, exposing the full extent of his deception.
“This conviction highlights the serious risks of dealing with unregistered or suspicious car sellers. Protect your investment and yourself by practicing due diligence,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a statement.
Authorities have urged the public to verify dealers before making payments and to report suspicious operations.
