HARRY MAGUIRE has penned a new one-year deal with Manchester United.
The 33-year-old, who remains the most expensive centre-back in the world, had been expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, with his contract set to expire in June.
But he will now stay for at least one more year until the summer of 2027 with the option to extend for another season.
The England international said: “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour.
“It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad.
“The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, added: “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United.
“He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.
“Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”
Maguire has made 266 appearances for United since joining from Leicester City in 2019 — when he also became the most expensive centre-back in the world.
The Red Devils signed him in an £80million transfer, but his time at the club has not been smooth sailing.
He was named captain by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020 but had it stripped by Erik ten Hag three years later.
Maguire admitted at the time that he was “extremely disappointed” but vowed to continue fighting for his place in the team – despite receiving transfer interest from elsewhere.
The centre-back has enjoyed a resurgence in form since Michael Carrick was appointed interim head coach in January. — Sun
