As the arts sector continues to embrace the evolving digital space, local visual artists are set to open a virtual group exhibition on September 21.
Titled “An African Story”, the first local virtual showcase brings together 19 artists from different backgrounds.
Presented by Artgal.Online, the digital platform of Swiss-Zim Heritage Gallery, the groundbreaking exhibition is divided into three distinct centres, each offering a unique perspective on the theme.
The main hall features 15 male artists among them Barry Lungu, Samuel Sifani, Kudakwashe Chuma, Albert Mubatsa, Willard Mujuru, Noel Musekiwa, Stanley Sibanda, Aubrey Bango, Batsirai Muskwe and Menard Moyo,
Curated by Tonderai Mujuru and Keith Zenda (who also feature in the exhibition), this section delves into pressing issues such as the environment.
Mujuru, who is deeply committed to African wildlife conservation, portrays this passion through his stunning charcoal drawings, capturing the beauty and fragility of Africa’s natural heritage.
The second section of the exhibition features three female artists namely Roselyne Marakasi, Kimberly Gakanje and Lilian Magodi.
Zenda, an award-winning artist, said they are committed to amplifying the work of their female counterparts.
“The exhibition is committed to promoting female empowerment in the arts,” he said.
“Despite their smaller number, these women are given double the space to showcase their work, reflecting the exhibition’s aim to inspire more women to pursue and exhibit their artistic talents.”
The third centre is a tribute to one of Zimbabwe’s most revered sculptors, Sampson Kuvenguhwa.
This exclusive exhibition traces Kuvenguhwa’s journey from the late 1980s to the present day, showcasing his evolution as an artist.
Known for his meticulous carving of straight lines and unparalleled polishing skills, Kuvenguhwa’s work is both spiritually profound and technically masterful.
The exhibition will physically launch at Siyekhaya Estate in Harare, where all 19 artists will be present to display select works.
