United States of America’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pamela Tremont today visited Kuwadzana Extension water quality monitoring project in a development that highlights the Centres for Diseases Control (CDC) partnership with UNICEF in 2023 to support water quality monitoring in Harare.

Ambassador Tremont was accompanied by senior Government officials, UNICEF representatives and officials from the City of Harare.

Speaking during the tour, Ambassador Tremont said they were honored to see the substantial work by multiple stakeholders, coming together to ensure that the residents of Harare have access to clean and safe drinking water.

She commended the Government and stakeholders for declaring an end to the cholera outbreak on July 30th.

“Preventing the return of cholera is of utmost importance, and the US government is supporting several measures to do so,” Ambassador Tremont said.

“The US government has been instrumental in providing both financial and technical support for the implementation of measures to ensure there is access to safe water.

“Chlorination of drinking water protects the health of communities from cholera and other waterborne diseases.

“Monitoring chlorine levels allows us to make sure that water remains safe for use and enables the city authorities to respond rapidly if levels are too low.”

UNICEF representative Ms Etona Ekole said the partnership has not only enhanced infection prevention and control mechanisms but has also contributed to developing a costing tool for WASH services and the implementation of the WASH Facility Improvement Tool, or WASHFIT, here in Zimbabwe.

“UNICEF remains committed to mobilising additional funds from other donors to supplement the CDC’s efforts,” she said.
