Zimbabwe celebrates its independence on April 18.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo, who chairs the Independence organising taskforce yesterday said everything was on course for the big event.
“Work has started and the teams in the provinces are working hard to make the event a success,” he said.
The Harare province logistics committee would hold its third meeting today.
Harare Acting Governor Mr Alfred Tome yesterday said the province had set up sub-committees to work on the programme to ensure success at this year’s celebrations.
He said preparations were at an “advanced and pleasing stage”.
“Things are moving according to plan and we have held several meetings as the provincial logistics team. The main committee will meet for the third time (today) and we are involving all stakeholders in our planning,” he said.
He said stakeholders involved representatives from the political parties, transport industry and private sector.
“We are also working with those in the entertainment industry and we have also come up with mobilisation and publicity teams that will help us in bringing thousands of people to the stadium.”
Mr Tome said the annual Children’s Party that President Mugabe hosts for school children from the 10 provinces countrywide would be held on April 17 in Harare.
“A sub-committee is on the ground to ensure that the annual children’s party becomes a success. Rehearsals by school children and members of the uniformed forces will start on Wednesday,” he said.
“In certain areas we are almost done and it is our hope that by Monday next week everything will be in place.”
