Independence gala preparations on course

are on course, a Government official said yesterday.
Several artists from Zimbabwe and the region have confirmed their participation.
The gala is an annual event to commemorate the country’s independence.
Retired Major Anywhere Mutambudzi, the gala’s national co-ordinator and a director in the Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity, yesterday said this year’s event would be held under the theme “Defeating Sanctions for Total Empowerment”.
The gala comes a month after President Mugabe launched the National Anti-Sanctions Petition campaign in Harare. The petition seeks the signatures of two million people as a statement showing national opposition to the illegal Western embargo. Rtd Maj Mutambudzi said many local artistes had confirmed their participation except Sulumani Chimbetu and gospel artist Baba Mechanic Manyeruke, who will be out of the country.
There is a possibility that South African music icon Freddie “Amadamara” Gwala, a cultural dance group from Cuba and Namibia-based Zimbabwean artiste Simon Chidhuza and his group Sanyati Stars, will perform. Bulawayo-based Mokesi Connexion, who rose to fame with their hit song “Pfuma Yatete”, will have a chance to showcase their musical talent. Rtd Maj Mbudzi said a top-of-the-range sound system, good lighting and tight security were guaranteed and called on people to attend in large numbers.
