THE elderly in Mt Darwin hailed the holding of Zimbabwe’s main Independence Day celebrations on their doorstep.

One elderly woman, Scholastic Mapiye, told H-Metro that independence had seen the Government building more schools in their area.

She said she had struggled to educate her children before Independence, but because more schools were built after 1980, some of them were now professionals.

“Education is the key as what our national leaders keep reminding the youths,” said Gogo Scholastic.

“Nekushaiwa fundo yakakwana, vabereki vangu vakandipa zita rakanaka asi madaidziro acho zvainetsa rurimi.

“Vainditi Shorastica asi ndazokura ndakawona chitupa chakanyorwa zvisizvo.

“We failed to educate our children because of the war, but after gaining Independence, I worked hard with my late husband, working the land to educate our children.

“Today, I am proud that three of my seven children are professionals in the health and aviation fields.

“Independence brought peace, hospitals and clinics to our communities.

“We used to travel from Mt Darwin to Domboshava since Makumbe Hospital was among the few that treated TB,” she said.

Mashonaland Central has 785 schools of which 98 primary and 48 secondary schools are in Mt Darwin District.

Mashonaland Central provincial medical director, Dr Cremance Tshuma, said the province had 150 health facilities.

“Twelve of them are hospitals and the rest are clinics.

“Out of the 12 hospitals, seven are government and five are mission hospitals,” Dr Tshuma said.
