India seeks to erect Gandhi statue in Harare Gardens

Herald Reporter
INDIA intends to erect a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Harare Gardens and its embassy has since engaged council for authorisation. According to council minutes, India made the request through its ambassador, Mr Jeitendra Tripathi.

“His Worship, the mayor (Bernard Manyenyeni) reported that he had received a request from the Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe His Excellency, Mr Jeitendra Tripathi, for permission to erect a Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Harare Gardens,” read the minutes.

The matter is now being considered by council’s environmental management committee.

Gandhi was a fearless Indian revolutionary who freed his country from British colonialism in 1947. Through his work, he inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the globe.

During his 21-year stay in South Africa he fought apartheid demanding equal treatment of all races.

He was assassinated in 1948 in New Delhi, the Indian capital city.

His commitment to non-violence and belief in simple living became an inspiration for many liberation fighters who adopted his passive resistance approach.
