TWO children aged three months and five-years from Maphisa area died after a vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled several times.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred on Tuesday at the 103 km peg along the Bulawayo-Maphisa Road at around 7AM.
He said the driver, Mr Fortune Mlilo, lost control of the vehicle while trying to evade some donkeys which were on the road after trying to overtake another vehicle.
“I can confirm that we recorded a fatal road accident which occurred along the Bulawayo-Maphisa Road.
“Fortune Mlilo was driving a Toyota Sienta headed for Bulawayo with seven passengers on board. When he got to the 103 kilometre peg he tried to overtake another vehicle but realised that there were donkeys blocking the other lane.
“He tried to evade the donkeys and in the process lost control of the vehicle which rolled several times before landing on its roof. A three-month-old baby boy and a five-year-old girl died upon admission to Maphisa District Hospital while the other passengers and the driver sustained injuries,” he said.
Chief Insp Ndebele urged motorists to exercise caution when travelling along roads especially since some were in a bad condition. He also urged drivers to keep a proper lookout for animals on roads.
