Tsuro (49), who is also a soccer referee in the Premier Soccer League, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Silas Chitongo.
He was remanded in custody to Monday when the court is expected to make ruling on his bail application.
Tsuro allegedly used an axe handle to beat his wife Rosemary Charlie after a dispute over a house ownership.
Mr Chitongo said he needed time to consider submissions by both parties.
Defence lawyer Mr Norman Chigiya of Mupindu Legal Practitioners argued that Tsuro was a proper candidate for bail.
For the State, prosecutor Mr Henry Muringani opposed the bail saying Tsuro was likely to abscond.
The prosecution also feared that Tsuro would interfere with State witnesses if granted bail.
It was also the State’s submission that the condition of the battered wife was very critical and that the gravity of the matter would induce Tsuro to skip bail.
The State argued that it was improper to grant Tsuro bail as he stayed under the same roof with his wife.
The investigator Constable Petros Sarukore took to the witness’ stand giving evidence in opposing bail.
Cst Sarukore said the woman was still admitted at Chitungwiza Central Hospital and that her condition was still critical.
He said Tsuro’s release on bail would jeopardise investigations.
Mr Chigiya however, said his client was simply a victim of negative publicity in the press.
Mr Chigiya argued that Tsuro’s wife had cooked up the case following a domestic dispute over allegations of infidelity.
The court heard that the woman was the one who provoked Tsuro by telling him that her boyfriend called Flexon Ropi had better sexual vigour and stamina than Tsuro.
The woman is also alleged to have threatened to sell the couple’s matrimonial house.
Mr Chigiya proposed bail money in the sum of US$50 adding that the State’s fears could be eased by stringent bail conditions.
He said if granted bail, the accused would live at an alternative address and would not visit the hospital where his wife is recupera-ting.
