A LOCAL non-governmental organisation, Hope Restorers Academy has joined the corporate world in providing food aid to the vulnerable in a bid to address food challenges that have affected many families countrywide in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The organisation last Wednesday donated food hampers to 14 vulnerable families in Makokoba suburb, a majority headed by elderly persons or people in the informal sector. The food hampers consisted of a 10kg packet of mealie-meal, 4 litres of cooking oil, 5kg rice, 4kg flour, 2kg salt, bars of soap and cabbages. Founder of the organisation Ms Michelle Msimanga said the donation was meant to alleviate lives of vulnerable members affected by the pandemic.
“The lockdown period has brought about difficulties in the day to day living of many people who are no longer able to put food on the table. We hope the food hampers to the selected families will go a long way in ensuring poverty and hunger is eradicated in the suburb,” said Ms Msimanga.
She said beneficiaries of the programme included people in the informal sector as they have been greatly affected by the novel coronavirus.
Since the start of the lockdown over 40 days ago, the informal sector among them street vendors and hawkers have had no place to sell their wares and now do not have a consistent source of income as in the pre-lockdown period.
