PRISON inmates yesterday put aside their daily worries when they took part in the Edward Sadomba football tournament which ends today. Nine teams from correctional facilities under Mashonaland were grouped into threes in the pool stages with Kentucky, Kadoma and Bindura in Group A while Harare Central, Hurungwe and Mozoe were in Group B.
Chikurubi, Karoi and Chinhoyi in Group C.
Chikurubi, Kentucky, and Harare emerged victorious in the group stages.
Hurugwe will also proceed to the semi-finals after they emerged as the best runner-ups following impressive performances.
Public relations officer Solomon Mutamba said yesterday’s games were an eye-opener that a lot of raw talent is hidden behind bars.
“The men displayed great skill and agility in the box. They were also very disciplined and you could see that they were playing with dedication and passion.
“Those responsible for scouting for the team to represent Mashonaland will definitely have their work cut out for them because most of the players here are unbelievably good.
“That also gives us confidence that we stand a good chance when we will battle it out with other provincial select teams.”
The tournament is being sponsored by Zimbabwe international Edward Sadomba through his Sadomba Foundation.
“Through his Foundation he approached ZPCS Mash Region through OIC Chikurubi Farm Prison and expressed an intention to host the Sadomba Soccer Tournament comprising of nine correctional facilities namely Chikurubi Farm Prison, Harare Central Prison, Chinhoyi Prison, Kadoma Security medium Prison, Hurungwe Farm Prison, Mazoe Farm Prison and Bindura Farm Prison,” said continue sponsoring the tournament so that it becomes an annual event.”
