FORTY-SEVEN inmates at Harare Central Prison are sitting for their June exams at the capital’s correctional facility examination centre, Harare Central Adult School, with at least 50 expected to write in November.
The ongoing June 2020 examination sessions for both Ordinary and Advanced Level will run until July 20 and 23 respectively.
The inmates are sitting for English, Mathematics, Commerce, Geography, History, Accounts, Shona and Economics under Harare Central Adult School.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) spokesperson, Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, said allowing inmates to sit for examinations is part of their rehabilitation programme.
“Rehabilitating these people should extend to life after incarceration. When we give them access to education it means after serving their time, they have a solid educational foundation making it easy to manoeuvre in life and as well blend in their respective communities.
“After O and A-Level, they can also take up vocational courses, diplomas or even degrees depending on their choices and accessibility within our facilities.
“We understand that finding a job out there may be tough but with technical skills they can become self-reliant,” said Khanyezi.
