The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services yesterday launched the Innovation Week, emphasising the importance of research and innovation in Zimbabwe’s economic and digital transformation.
Running under the theme, “Accelerating the digital economy for inclusive development,” the Innovation Week aims to promote research-driven solutions for economic growth.
Director for Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms Georgina Chingonzo, who represented the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Dr Beaullah Chirume, stressed the need for innovation-oriented approaches.
“Such events underscore the university (Midlands State University and other development partners’) commitment to harnessing our natural endowments and indigenous knowledge systems, both of which are key to boosting local production and expanding export potential,” she stated.
Dr Chirume highlighted that these innovations are rooted in the country’s resources and are vital for enhancing Zimbabwe’s economy, resonating with the national mantra, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo”.
“The exhibitions showcased reflect our commitment to driving industrialisation through effective use of our resources, skills, capabilities, and talents,” she added.
Mr Stephen Mugara, organiser of the event from the Great Zambezi Initiative, referred to Innovation Week as a “womb of innovation and development,” aimed at nurturing ideas that will shape the future of industries and communities.
“In this space of collaboration and creativity, we will ignite the sparks of change that drive progress and empower our people to realise their full potential,” he remarked.
He also emphasised that digital industrial initiatives should align with the key areas outlined in the National Development Strategy 1 and 2, highlighting the commitment of private sector players to contribute to the country’s aspirations.
The Innovation Week serves as a testament to Zimbabwe’s dedication to fostering an innovative environment that propels its economic recovery and development.
