THEY have built a strong academic reputation over the years.
And for this reason, they are one of the most-sought-after institutions, not only in Zimbabwe but across the SADC region.
Yet Goromonzi High School have, in recent years, carved a niche in sporting excellence with prospective athletes also prioritising enrolling with the Mashonaland East-based learning centre.
They have churned out top-notch sports persons in different fields over the years.
Female rugby starlets Ropafadzo Madya, Charity Kwete and Nyasha Gonan’ombe who are all plying their trade in South Africa as well as American based Sandile Chidawanyika were nurtured at Goromonzi.
They also have one of their products, Michael Mubaiwa who is playing in China. Soccer stars Kelvin Sithole and Tinotenda Sabau are playing in the United States of America.
There are also a number of basketball players developed at this school who have made it big in the local and international scene.
It all started when the school appointed Tendai Gwaza as the sports director.
“Once they appointed me, I decided to take only qualified coaches, who have the requisite experience and knowledge to coach the different sports at the school,” he said.
“We have managed to transform the school which was previously for those gifted academically into a sporting powerhouse. We have achieved this through assigning the proper coaches with the requisite skills to be in charge of the teams.
“We have also integrated talented players scouted from elsewhere to boost our teams thanks to the support from the school staff led by the headmaster Norman Gombera.”
The school is riding on the crest of the wave after coming out tops in a four-sport-code 20-team tournament they hosted last weekend.
The teams battled it out in volleyball, basketball, netball and football.
The hosts dismissed Winwood 12-9 to claim gold in netball with the football team beating Sodbury 3-0 in the final as well.
Their girls basketball team came short though in the final losing 12-35 to Girls High.
The tournament was bankrolled Brace Hardware and Executive Club as well as Secondary Book Press.
Goromonzi High netball captain Berlin Basvi said the philosophy of the school makes it easy for them to thrive.
“Look, we have a team of dedicated staff and it is very easy for us as players to also copy them.
“As the netball team, we know what we can do and the potential which we have.
“We all want to attain greatness by playing for the national team,” she said.
“The philosophy is good and the stages we are taken through is systematic. We will continue working hard and following the right procedure s to achieve our goals.”
Girls basketball skipper Kirsty Andreya believes passion drives her team to their goals.
“As the basketball team, I think what makes us win is our passion , dedication and our ability to dream big” said Andreya.
“We motivate each other daily to keep moving till we reach our goals and achieve greatness,as we do not just see ourselves playing for Goromonzi High only in the NBA itself.”
“Generally, the Goromonzi High School environment makes it easy for us to win because everything is tailormade to improve our performance.
“We are looking forward to a good year.”
The school’s Under-20 football team is also the defending champion in the Nash competition having won the gong in Kwekwe in August last year.
