Rhumba/Tshibilika music group Insimbi ZeZhwane have paid a heartfelt tribute to two of their late members, Elvis “MaEli” Mathe and Thembinkosi “Maviri” Mpofu.
MaEli succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident involving the band along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road near the Fatima High School turn-off on August 5, 2023, while Maviri died on the spot.
MaEli is widely credited with creating a distinctive rhumba sound that propelled Insimbi ZeZhwane to prominence, making the outfit one of the most sought-after live rhumba bands in the Matabeleland region.
Remembering MaEli, the band described him as a vital pillar of Insimbi ZeZhwane.
“As Insimbi Zezhwane band and fans, today we pause to remember our beloved lead vocalist and lead guitarist, Elvis ‘MaEli’ Mathe, who departed from us on this day, 5 August 2023.
“MaEli was more than just a musician; he was the heart, soul and driving force behind the unique sound that made Insimbi Zezhwane loved by thousands of fans across Zimbabwe, South Africa and beyond. His powerful voice, exceptional guitar skills, stage presence and dedication to music helped shape the band’s identity and inspired many young artistes,” said the band.
The group said MaEli’s contribution to Zimbabwean rhumba remains unmatched, with his musical innovation leaving a lasting imprint on the band.
“His untimely passing in a tragic road accident alongside fellow band member Thembinkosi ‘Maviri’ Mpofu left a void that can never truly be filled. Yet, his legacy continues to live on through the music he created, the memories he shared with fans, and the vision he helped build for Insimbi Zezhwane.
“We honour a brother, a leader, a gifted vocalist, a talented guitarist and a true son of the soil. Though he is gone, his melodies continue to echo in our hearts and his contribution to Zimbabwean music will never be forgotten,” the band said.
Paying tribute to Maviri, the group described him as the heartbeat of Insimbi ZeZhwane.
“Maviri was far more than a drummer. He was the heartbeat of Insimbi Zezhwane. His powerful rhythms, unwavering dedication and deep passion for music gave life to every performance. Behind every song was the steady beat of his drums, keeping the band united and inspiring both his fellow musicians and thousands of fans.
“Known for his humility, discipline and warm spirit, Maviri earned the respect of everyone who had the privilege of working with him. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, he carried himself with kindness and always put the band and the fans first,” said the band.
The band said the loss of MaEli and Maviri continues to be deeply felt, but their legacy lives on through the music they created together.
“Their talent, friendship and contribution to Zimbabwean rhumba music remain unforgettable. Though they are no longer with us, their legacy lives on in every beat, every melody and every memory they created with Insimbi Zezhwane. Rest in eternal peac.”
