Inspired by the Sables, Zimbabwe’s Golfers Aim for Glory in Singapore

THE Sables’ recent resurgence has become more than a rugby success story. Zimbabwe’s national team qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup is now fuelling ambition across the country’s sporting landscape.

Their milestone isn’t just a win for rugby, it’s proof of what belief, structure, and consistent support can make possible. And other disciplines are taking note.

One of them is golf.

Riding the wave of national pride, the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) is drawing inspiration from the Sables as their amateur squad gears up for the 2025 World Amateur Team Championship (WATC), set for Singapore from 8 to 11October.

Zimbabwe will compete for the Eisenhower Trophy alongside South Africa and Uganda, one of only three African countries in the field.

ZGA president Blessmore Gandawa, praised the Sables for reigniting belief and drive across Zimbabwean sport, saying their journey has directly inspired the golf team’s mindset heading into the global stage.

“We are also riding on the Sables’ momentum as golf and we applaud our fellow NSA, they have given us the drive, zeal and inspiration. We are truly inspired to achieve more when we compete at the WATC. It is of great national pride and we are happy our national flag will be flying high in Singapore, visible to the whole world.

“We are not there by chance, we truly deserve to be there. We earned our slot through participation in the World Amateur Golf Ranking tournaments, which are played locally, regionally and internationally. Our players have posted great results and at times winning competitions outside our borders, which has greatly contributed to our ranking on the WAGR. This has earned us this slot,” said Gandawa.

He also made a direct appeal to Zimbabwe’s business sector to step up and support the team, framing it as a win-win opportunity.

“Our qualification is not only a source of joy and pride to the generality of the population, but it also presents the local corporate world with an unmatched and unparalleled opportunity to partner us as they stand to benefit from brand exposure to the global market. It is in this regard that I would like to appeal to the captains of Industry to consider partnering with us so that together we can expose Zimbabwe to the entire global stage.

“Like they say it takes two to tangle. We cannot clearly go it alone but we need corporate support so that our team will be a marvel to watch and the lasting impressions that it will leave on and off the course will live on as a result of the collaboration and support that we would have received.”
