Insurance innovation drive set to complement Government’s digital transformation agenda

IN a move expected to complement Government efforts to modernise the economy, deepen financial inclusion and accelerate digital transformation, the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has launched an innovation initiative aimed at harnessing technology-driven solutions to expand access to insurance services across the country.

The initiative, being spearheaded through the ICZ Innovation Hub, is inviting innovators, start-ups, students, researchers, technology providers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and solution builders to develop transformative ideas capable of addressing challenges within Zimbabwe’s insurance sector.

The programme comes as the Government continues to champion the adoption of innovation, research and technology as key enablers of economic growth and the attainment of Vision 2030.
Announcing the initiative, ICZ said the programme seeks to unlock innovative solutions that can improve insurance penetration, enhance efficiency and strengthen resilience within the sector.

“Got an idea that could transform insurance in Zimbabwe?” The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) is calling on innovators, start-ups, students, researchers, tech providers, MSMEs and solution builders to submit groundbreaking ideas to the ICZ Innovation Hub,” ICZ said in its call for submissions.
The council said the initiative was open to solutions that improve insurance access, simplify claims processes, combat fraud, advance financial inclusion, leverage artificial intelligence and data analytics, and strengthen climate resilience.

“Whether your solution improves insurance access, simplifies claims, combats fraud, drives financial inclusion, leverages AI and data analytics, or builds climate resilience, this is your opportunity to shape the future of Zimbabwe’s insurance industry,” said ICZ.
The innovation challenge is focusing on key strategic areas that include insurance distribution, claims management, fraud detection, aggregation models, financial inclusion, climate resilience and the use of data, artificial intelligence and analytics.

These focus areas are closely aligned with the Government’s broader economic modernisation agenda, which places emphasis on digitalisation, innovation and technology-driven service delivery.
Experts say the initiative has the potential to stimulate the development of home-grown solutions capable of addressing long-standing challenges in the insurance sector while supporting broader national objectives of expanding access to financial services.
The programme also presents opportunities for universities, research institutions and emerging entrepreneurs to commercialise innovative ideas and contribute to economic development through technology-based solutions.

With insurance penetration remaining relatively low among some segments of society, particularly within rural communities and the informal sector, innovative solutions are increasingly being viewed as critical in bridging accessibility gaps and bringing more Zimbabweans into the formal financial system.
The initiative also comes at a time when climate-related risks are becoming more pronounced, increasing the need for innovative insurance products and risk-management solutions capable of protecting communities, farmers and businesses from adverse weather events.

Government has repeatedly underscored the importance of embracing innovation and technology as part of efforts to improve service delivery, create employment opportunities and build a resilient economy.
The ICZ Innovation Hub initiative is expected to contribute towards these objectives by creating a platform for innovators to develop practical solutions that respond to emerging challenges within the insurance industry and the wider economy.

Industry observers say the programme reflects the growing role of innovation-led development in Zimbabwe’s economic transformation journey and highlights the increasing collaboration between industry, researchers and technology innovators in driving sustainable growth.
