THE Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (IIZ) has retained its president, Mr Panganai Sanangurai, who will lead the institute’s 12-member board for another year.

He was president in 2022 and was retained during a board meeting held at the annual conference that ended in Victoria Falls yesterday.

Mr Sanangurai will be deputised by Mr Tatenda Katoma and Ms Dorcas Chihota as first and second vice presidents respectively.

THE Zimbabwe Association of Funeral Assurers

Mr Sanangurai is a member of the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe and other board members include Mr Calvern Mutyavaviri also from ICZ, Ms Chihota and Mr Workmore Chimweta (both from Life Offices Association), Mr Katoma and Mr Isaac Zinhanga (Zimbabwe Association of Reinsurance Offices), Mr Erasmus Chiridza and Ms Loice Kunyongana (Zimbabwe Association of Funeral Assurers), Mr Tawanda Karovedzai and Mr Phillip Mutasa (Zimbabwe Insurance Brokers Association), Mr Tafadzva Vukomba from Insurance Institute of Harare and Ms Roseline Magagula from the Insurance Institute of Bulawayo.

The new board takes office immediately until November 2023.
In his acceptance speech Mr Sanangurai said his mandate will be to continue rebuilding the institute particularly after the effects of Covid-19 pandemic and loss of key members through brain drain.

“I humbly accept the IIZ presidency for another term and I am pleased to have an opportunity to continue with the rebuilding of the institute. I once again pledge my full loyalty to the entire industry to continue exploring ways and means to improve and grow IIZ brand and to ensure restoration of the original mandate of the institute, which is the delivery of training education requirements to the entire insurance industry,” he said.

Mr Sanangurai said his leadership will continue with its efforts to make the institute a market leader in insurance professional development in Africa and the world.

Top on the priority list of the board will be the construction of the college of insurance, which was shelved in 2019 because of lack of resources.

The building plans for the facility to be built in Mt Pleasant in Harare, are in place and what is missing is funding.

The board also promised to continue with development of the insurance curriculum, which is being implemented in phases with the fellowship already done and two batches of students having graduated last year and this year.

The development of the remainder of the curriculum has been completed with the first examinations set to commence in April 2024, said Mr Sanangurai.
