AS the world marks International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD), the spotlight is once again turned on the rights and well-being of people with albinism across the globe.

This year’s commemoration carries the theme, ‘10 years of IAAD: a decade of collective progress’, signifying a period of reflection, progress and a call to action.

In a statement, representative of persons with disabilities in the Senate, Senator Anna Shiri said: “We join the global community in celebrating this special day, reaffirming our commitment to promoting and championing the rights of people with albinism.

“As the world commemorates International Albinism Awareness Day, the call for meaningful advocacy, progressive laws, policies and responsive budgetary allocations becomes ever more crucial.”

Ms Shiri highlighted that the journey ahead involves standing side by side with persons with albinism and the broader constituency of persons with disabilities, working towards a future where their rights are fully recognised, and their complexities are understood and addressed.

“While celebrating this important day, let us remember that the fight for the rights and well-being of people with albinism is ongoing, and our collective efforts remain vital in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society,” she said.
