The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has underscored the importance of local production and robust regulations to ensure the safety, efficacy and quality of medical products.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, MCAZ Head of Evaluation and Registration, Mr Farai Masekela, said there was a need for collaboration between Government, the private sector, clinicians, and entrepreneurs to foster innovation and growth in the medical technology sector.

“For Zimbabwe and other low and middle-income countries, local manufacturing is a strategic imperative. It reduces dependency on imports, enhances access to essential medical devices, creates jobs and stimulates economic growth.

“By fostering a thriving local industry, we can ensure a more reliable and sustainable supply of medical devices that meet our specific healthcare needs,” he said.

Mr Masekela urged start-ups and entrepreneurs to partner with the regulator to create a competitive market for locally produced medical products.

He said MCAZ was committed to providing a supportive regulatory environment to ensure devices meet international standards and safeguard public health.

The authority is drafting regulations to control the quality and safety of medical devices, aligning with global trends and standards to facilitate export and innovation.
