Susan Zevgolis, the secretary of the DragPro Club who run drag racing in this country, revealed yesterday that two “proper drag cars” from South Africa have been entered for the July 6 race meeting, bringing more competition to the Zimbabwean competitors.
“Our next race meeting is on July 6 and it seems like a few of the regular cars may be ‘off the road’ for this one. However, the big news is we are on schedule to host two proper drag cars from South Africa with their driver/owner (ex-Zimbabwean, Reg Murray).
“His vehicles are a ‘door slammer’ and ‘rail car’ that currently compete in the South African series. First time in decades, Harare has seen proper drag cars! Of course subject to a clear border crossing and the vehicles being in sound mechanical condition at the time,” Zevgolis said.
And local drag racing followers can’t wait for July 6 to come as they prepare to watch these two South African cars in action in what promises to be another exciting day for this sport which has taken the Zimbabwean motorsport scene by storm this year.
The last drag racing meeting, which was staged at Donnybrook on April 28 attracted a big crowd of over 2 700 people and Zevgolis said they were expecting another “bumper crowd” for the July 6 event, “especially with the coming in of the proper drag cars from South Africa”.
Temba Mazvimbakupa of the Zimbabwe Motorsport Federation added: “It’s no secret that drag racing has become one of the biggest motorsport events in Zimbabwe and this is all because of the professionalism that is being applied by the DragPro Club in running the sport in this country.
“And we, at the ZMSF, are more than excited to learn that the DragPro Club have managed to lure two proper drag cars from South Africa for the July 6 event at Donnybrook and this will add more excitement to this already popular event.”
