Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko has called on Government to introduce the teaching of science and mathematics subjects in schools starting at Early Childhood Development level.
He made the remarks while commissioning a $46 000 administration block and a library on Friday, which were constructed and handed over to Malusungane Primary school by Zanu-PF central committee member and former ambassador to Egypt Dr Aaron Maboyi Ncube.
The ambassador is a former student at the school, which is located 130km west of Beitbridge town.
The VP said science was a critical component for the development of education and economic sectors in the country.
“Education is an important part towards economic development of any nation and hence emphasis should be put on introducing the learning of science and technical subjects at an early stage to our children,” he said.
“Empowering children with the requisite knowledge at an early development stage will help them to unlock their potential to exploit natural resources in their respective areas”.
VP Mphoko said parents and the community in Matabeleland region should encourage their children to go to school rather than focusing on irregular migration.
He said it was also important for Government to increase the number of schools in the country and equip them to encourage the learning culture among its citizens.
“We should not let our children focus on irregular migration because life is never easy in the so called greener pastures. In some instances these (children) are susceptible to abuse at the hands of human smugglers on their way to other countries including South Africa,” he said.
He added that it was of paramount importance for people in the rural areas to pull resources together towards the development of their respective areas.
“There is no one who will come here with development initiatives in your area unless there will be a prize for that initiative. You should emulate what Ambassador Maboyi has done to this community,” said the VP.
He added that it was important for the elderly people in the country to consider imparting knowledge relating to various traditional secrets to the young generation.
“It is common knowledge that the Venda people have vast knowledge in traditional medicine and that should not die with the old generation, we need to continue passing to the young generation and merge it with modern technologies” he said.
Speaking at the same event, Ambassador Maboyi Ncube called on other luminaries in Beitbridge West constituency to consider pulling resources towards the development of various key infrastructure in the area.
“It is important that people unite for one cause. The development of any area needs an integrated effort and hence we need to work together with different development players and look at how best we can develop as a people socially, economical and culturally,” he said.
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of State for National Security, Cde Kembo Mohadi, Senator for Beitbridge Cde Tambudzani Mohadi, Beitbridge West constituency legislature, Cde Metrine Mudau and Matabeleland South Acting chairperson Cde Rabelani Choeni and other senior civil servants from across the country.
