A company that has been granted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate to establish a US$1 billion cement plant at Magunje Growth Point has pledged to develop the area’s infrastructure.
A solar farm will also be established at the cement farm.

WHI-Zim Construction Material Investments said it will construct six classroom blocks, two clinics, a 45-kilometre concrete road running from Katenhe to Chidamoyo, the chief’s house and a courtroom as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. It will also install 10 solar-powered boreholes.

In a letter seen by this publication written to the Hurungwe Rural District Council acting chief executive officer, Ms Felistus Mteta, the investor vowed to plough back into the community.

Chief Chanetsa offered 135 hectares of land in his area for the cement plant and solar farm.

Said Chief Chanetsa: “All the stated community developmental initiatives will enhance the lives of the people in the area and the nation at large, hence I have no objection to such a big project which will contribute towards the attainment of President Mnangagwa’s vision.”

The cement project is expected to employ over 1 000 young people. Power generated at the plant will be fed into the national grid.
