A 32-YEAR-OLD man from Emaqaqeni Village in Inyathi has been ordered to pay a fine of US$400 or in default face six months imprisonment after being found guilty of illegally connecting Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) wires.
A further six months of his sentence were suspended for five years after facing charges
According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on 4 September 2024 at around 4 pm, ZESA officials inspecting connections at Inyathi area arrived at the accused person, Zibusiso Ngwenya’s workplace where he is employed as a tyre repair and car wash attendant at the Inyathi Bus Terminus.
“The officer inspected the ZESA connections at his workplace and discovered that the accused person was using electricity from an ungoverned source as he had bypassed and diverted electric current using it illegally and without a meter to pay for his electricity bills,” reads the statement.
The accused person was interviewed concerning the issue and he pointed out that his meter was burnt and he was waiting for a replacement from ZESA.
“The loss control technician captured the illegal connection and filled a police report the following day,” said the NPAZ.
The police officers together with the ZESA team went to the scene and found the illegal connections disconnected, then the accused person was subsequently arrested.
