POLICE have arrested a 46-year-old fugitive from Inyathi who bludgeoned his wife and cousin with a hammer before stabbing them with a spear several times in a domestic dispute.
Amos Nkala of Balanda area, Village 7, Ward 8 in Bubi District, was arrested in Gutu District in Masvingo Province, where he had sought refuge at a relative’s home. Nkala fled from the scene after committing the crimes around 20 May this year.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese, confirmed the arrest, saying police have diligently, through networking managed to trace Nkala.
“He was arrested in Gutu area, where he had sought refuge. He is in police custody and will appear in court on Monday (tomorrow),” she said.
According to a story published in our sister paper — Chronicle, villagers failed to stomach the gory murder scene. Zanu-PF councillor for Ward 8, Clr Herbert Ngwendu said the blood-curdling incident occurred while most villagers had gone to church.
“There was blood everywhere. The upper parts of the bodies looked flattened. Nkala, after pulverising them with a hammer, stabbed his wife Simangele Tshuma (41) four times in her back, thrice in the chest and once in the head,” said Clr Ngwendu.
“His cousin Nongazi Nkala (39) was stabbed twice in the back, once on the forehead, four times in the chest and abdomen before he left the spear stuck in her left breast.”
Sources said Tshuma, who had gone to South Africa for a break, had returned a few days before she was gruesomely murdered.
