The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Dr Kirsty Coventry, has discussed ways of improving Zimbabwe’s sports sector with Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, signalling a game-changing era for sports development in Zimbabwe.

Dr Coventry holds the most powerful position in world sports, influencing the Olympic Games and international sports policies.

The discussions centred around various initiatives that promise to enhance the country’s sports sector, providing much-needed support for athletes, coaches and infrastructure.

Dr Coventry – a decorated Olympian – outlined a comprehensive plan that includes scholarships for young athletes, specialised training programmes for coaches and financial assistance aimed at supporting promising sporting talents across the world, which Zimbabwe can tap from.

“The Acting President welcomed me home. We discussed different sporting opportunities specifically in and around the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics,” said Dr Coventry.

“We talked about how we can continue working together. At the International Olympic Committee, we give Olympic solidarity scholarships to all national Olympic committees, as well as some other training initiatives for coaches as well as for teams.

“That’s funding that goes directly to national Olympic committees to direct funding for athletes through scholarships.”
