IPEC warns motorists against buying fake insurance

The Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) has urged motorists not to buy vehicle insurance from touts operating outside Zimbabwe National Roads Administration and Zimpost offices. In an interview, IPEC public relations officer Mr Lloyd Gumbo said people should not buy vehicle licenses from touts or vendors found outside Zinara and Zimpost offices because some were selling fake insurance policies and they would not be compensated in case of accidents.

“People should desist from buying vehicle insurance outside Zinara and Zimpost offices because they are fake and in case of accidents there will be no compensation,” said Mr Gumbo.

Mr Gumbo said people should only buy insurance policies from companies registered by the insurance and pensions regulator. He encouraged pensioners to claim their benefits.

“I advise people to buy their insurances from registered companies and those who have been working for companies who were contributing money with the pension schemes to claim their money depending on the period they worked because it belongs to them,” said Mr Gumbo.

He said statistics from IPEC showed that about 24 000 pensioners had not claimed their benefits, with the unclaimed benefits amounting to $25 million. The highest numbers of unclaimed benefits are in clothing and mining industries.

“Statistics from Insurance and Pensions Commission show that about 24 000 pensioners have not claimed their benefits from the companies which they worked for, especially those in the clothing and mining industries,” said Mr Gumbo.

“The unclaimed benefits amount to $25 million and it’s so sad that the beneficiaries continue to live in poverty while their money is lying idle.”
