“There has been a high turn-out” and “most probably the voting hours will be extended” in order to let all the voters to cast their ballots, said Mohammad-Najjar.
According to Iran’s election law, the regular voting time for the presidential election is 10 hours a day, but it can be prolonged in some major cities by the interior minister if he deems the move necessary.
Mohammad-Najjar added the counting of the votes will be started immediately after the poll is closed.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cast his vote early Friday morning and opened the poll at 08:00 a.m. local time (0330 GMT).
Nearly 50.5 million eligible voters are expected to cast ballot for six candidates qualified by Iran’s Guardian Council of Constitution, to choose a successor to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
