IN a shocking tale of family betrayal, a 39-year-old man from Bulawayo found himself in court after he was caught stealing from his blood brother.

Alfred Mugazada was dragged before Bulawayo Magistrate Ms Evia Matura, who wasted no time in slapping him with 250 hours of community service after he admitted to the bizarre crime. His offence was breaking into his elder brother’s house and stealing a Russell Hobbs iron.

According to State Prosecutor Ms Josephine Gurazhira, the incident occurred on 27 May at around 4pm. Mugazada took advantage of his brother’s absence and sneaked into his house. He allegedly made his way into Shepherd Jabu’s home without permission, stole the iron valued at US$85, and sold it for quick cash.

“The accused unlawfully entered the complainant’s residence and took the iron. He then went on to sell it to an unknown individual. The stolen property was never recovered,” said Ms Gurazhira during court proceedings.

Family members were stunned by Mugazada’s actions, with sources close to the matter saying the brothers had recently fallen out over money.

“What hurts the most is that he didn’t just steal from anyone, he stole from his own brother. That iron was brand new. Now, he is out there doing community service because of greed,” said a relative who asked not to be named.

Mugazada pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency, saying he had fallen on hard times and needed money urgently.

Magistrate Matura, while acknowledging the hardship, said stealing from family was unacceptable and gave him 250 hours of unpaid work at a local council office.
The court also noted that the iron was never recovered and warned Mugazada against future criminal behaviour.
