A COWDRAY Park family was left shaken and traumatised after two gun-wielding robbers in balaclavas stormed their home, pointed a pistol at them, and tied them up using shoelaces before making off with US$160.
The heart-stopping incident happened last Saturday around 7pm when Liyaranda Simba and Leeroy Simba were relaxing and watching TV in their living room.
According to a neighbour who asked not to be named, the armed duo scaled the precast wall and gained entry through the backyard.
“It was like a crime novel. The two masked men jumped over the wall and stormed into the house. One of them pointed a gun at Liyaranda and threatened to finish them off if they didn’t cooperate. They ordered them to lie face-down on the floor,” said the neighbour.
The robbers tied the pair’s legs together using a shoelace and threw a blanket over their heads to blindfold them. They demanded cash and valuables, ransacking drawers and cabinets in search of money.
“They overturned furniture, opened cupboards and rummaged through everything. They eventually found US$160 and took it before fleeing the scene,” added the neighbour.
Moments later, Nobesuthu Mabhena, a family member, arrived home and was greeted by chaos. She found Liyaranda and Leeroy tied up on the floor and the house turned upside down.
She quickly alerted the police, who arrived at the scene shortly after.
Bulawayo Police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the robbery.
“We can confirm that two armed suspects robbed a family in Cowdray Park suburb. We are appealing to members of the public who may have information that could lead to their arrest to come forward. Anyone with details can contact any nearest police station or call 603358,” said Inspector Msebele.
Efforts to reach Nobesuthu for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.
Police investigations are underway.
