IS history repeating itself in Dynamos’ Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign? Five years ago, the Harare giants found themselves in the same predicament in which they are now — 11 points behind the log leaders — and in desperate need to breathe life into their stuttering campaign that was characterised by an inconsistent run laced with some draws.
Then as now Lloyd “Samaita’’ Mutasa was the head coach with the former Kiglon and Highway coach trailing Rahman Gumbo’s FC Platinum by 11 points ahead of the home stretch in the title race.
Then as now club president Kenny Mubaiwa and the Dynamos board of directors chairman Bernard Marriot Lusengo were having serious doubts about DeMbare’s capacity to overhaul the 11-point deficit and claim the championship. Those doubts just like now were heightened by Dynamos’ morale sapping 2-0 defeat by lowly Black Mambas.
Dynamos who were looking to reduce the gap between leaders FC Platinum and them suffered a shock 2-1 loss at basement club Border Strikers that left them 11 points adrift of the miners.
After that loss to Mambas in 2011, Mubaiwa decided to wiled the axe on Mutasa, albeit, following some intense lobbying from his friend and former club chairman Philip Mugadza with the later businessman advising the Dynamos resident to hire Callisto Pasuwa for the remaining 12 games.
As has now become common history, Pasuwa began his tenure as DeMbare coach with a crushing 4-1 triumph over Shooting Stars at Rufaro.
Pasuwa had held his first training session soon after the Heroes holidays with his appointment having been triggered by an emergency management meeting held at East 24 restaurant during those Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays.
