The State of Palestine has condemned Israel’s recent Knesset decision to ban United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) activities and strip its staff of diplomatic privileges.
The move is believed to be a flagrant violation of international law and a direct assault on the rights of Palestinian refugees.
In a statement, the Ambassador of Palestine to Zimbabwe Dr Tamer Almassri said the new law aimed to erase the Palestinian refugee issue and deny their right to return and compensation.
“This does not only target refugees but also undermines the authority of the United Nations, which established UNRWA in 1949,” he said.
“Palestine views Israel’s actions as a clear indication of its descent into a fascist state. The international community must take decisive action to counter this dangerous legislation and hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law,” he said.
“Palestine calls for Israel’s isolation and removal from international legitimacy. Palestine reiterates the global obligation to prevent breaches of international law in Gaza, including the denial of humanitarian aid, the use of starvation as a weapon of war and forced displacement.”
Ambassador Almassri urged the international community to compel Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s orders.
The orders include ensuring the delivery of essential services and humanitarian aid to Gaza and the West Bank, as well as ending Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
“The international community must continue to support UNRWA, which provides vital services to over 5,9 million Palestinian refugees,” Ambassador Almassri said.
