IT’S A LANDMARK MOMENT, SAYS CHESS TEAM HOD

THE head of delegation of the Zimbabwe chess team for the World Cadet Championships in Kazakhstan says this will be a significant moment for the athletes who are set to take part.

The 2025 edition of the World Cadet Chess Championships, which will feature Under-8, Under-10, and Under-12 teams, will be held in Almaty, with 87 countries taking part.

The tournament will run from today to October 1.

Head of Delegation, Mercy Mushangwe, and her team left the country yesterday ahead of the tournament, which roars into life today.

The team comprises Jemimah Masarira, Natalie Ruvarashe Ndoro, Princess Eleanor Ncube, Atida Mukono and Abdiel Timukudzeshe Mtakiwa.

Mushangwe said:

“We are looking forward to a great tournament and the players are ready to fly the Zimbabwe flag high,” she said.

“This will be significant in the progression of our chess players as young as they are.

“We are looking forward to having our national champions from this team very soon after getting this kind of exposure.

“The World Cadet Championships are quite significant in their progress in chess  these national champions international exposure.”
