Superstar Oliver Mtukudzi says he will not be taking part in any of the local award shows to give others a chance.
This means that Mtukudzi or Tuku will not be part of this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Music Awards as one of the nominees.“I am happy with ZIMA. It means a lot to Zimbabwean musicians but let it be known that Samanyanga, as someone who has been in the industry for a long time now and having mentored a number of artists I think it’s time that I celebrate the achievements of those I have mentored and those who came after me. So I will not be a nominee or a winner in this year’s edition,” he said.

Speaking about awards ceremonies in Zimbabwe, Tuku said the awards cannot be downplayed because they elevate musicians and boost their public profile, locally and even internationally.

He commended artists to develop their talent and encouraged them to build a profile that not only they are proud of but also makes the nation proud.

Tuku expressed his wish for the younger generation to appreciate the value of being nominated for a major accolade.

“Awards ceremonies are not just about winning but the recognition and being considered as one of the frontrunners in your category, kuwana nomination ndikokuhwina. It means you are doing well and you are being encouraged to continue. You are already a winner,” he said.

He also urged artists to realise that awards are not battles pitting artists against each other but instead must be viewed as a platform to assess their performance against their peers.

ZIMA chairman Joseph Nyadzayo expressed his gratitude to Tuku for his immense contribution, not only to the music industry  but also to ZIMA.

“Few people know that when we introduced the Cheukashure award in 2006, it was actually initiated by Tuku. He realised the importance of honouring the icons of Zimbabwean music, who have paved the way for this generations of musicians,” he said.

Tuku has received many accolades around the world including Cavaliere of the Order of Merit Award in recognition of his work and honoured by the government of Italy.
