A MUSHUMBI Pools man was last week slapped with a nine-year jail term for illegal possession of ivory and ammunition.

Francis Mapfumo (43) of Mapfumo Village under Chief Chitsungo was convicted by Guruve magistrate Mr Artwell Sanyatwe and was sentenced to nine years after the court found him guilty of illicit ivory trading and possession of live ammunition without a licence.

The court heard that on February 2, Mapfumo was found in possession of a pair of ivory weighing 31kg valued at $7 050 and one live round from a 303 rifle after police detectives received a tip-off from villagers.

Mr Albert Mazhindu prosecuted.

Illegal trade in ivory is rampant in Mbire District because of the high number of stray wild animal.
