VETERAN saxophonist and living legend, Phillip Svosve, just keeps getting better.
The granddaddy of Zim jazz music, who fronts Jabavu Drive, will be in action tomorrow afternoon at Habhana Lounge in Hillside.
It’s a special event for Svosve and his crew as the joint launches one of the trendiest restaurants in Harare.
They are set to perform from midday till 5pm.
In an interview with H-Metro, Svosve, who will be celebrating 55 years in the game, said he can’t wait to serenade jazz lovers.
“It’s our first time to perform at the venue and we understand they will be opening a new restaurant, which is likely to serve as a new venue for jazz players like us.
“I will be there with my outfit and I am really looking forward to the event.”
The 73-year-old believes jazz is here to stay.
“I know there are some genres which are doing well like amapiano and stuff but never rule out jazz because the mature crowd simply love it.
“We are here to save he genre and I am glad they are also youngsters who are studying jazz at various colleges.”
Svosve, who last year lost his close friend Nicholas Mugona, will be supported by Aarin Yafele.
The trombone player has been the vital cog of Jababvu Drive for over a decade now.
Event coordinator, Wanisayi “Mahwindo” Mutandwa urged old and new patrons to show up in numbers.
“It is a world-class joint which offers excellent service and affordable dishes and beers.
“Jabavu Drive plays old school copy rights for the mature crowd and their own compositions,” she said.
After the launch which ends around sunset, Mahwindo said more entertainment is guaranteed.
“After our launch, we are going to continue with Movement band and DJ Zulu.
“On Sunday we host the Marasta Night slot with House of Stone alongside Etherton Beenie and Garry B.
“As such, we are now promoting all jazz outfits every Saturday for our lunch patrons,” she said.
