From prequel to sequel, The Wolverine makes an explosive return, with Hugh Jackman stepping back into the role of Logan following the dramatics events of X Men: The Last Stand. Consumed by grief after the loss of fellow mutant Jean Grey (aka The Phoenix) – the X-Man has fallen back onto the lonely path of anti-social boozing, until an opportunity to reunite with a man he saved in World War II Japan takes his journey across the globe.
But once he heads East, the Wolverine is forced to battle for his life, and immortality, against a slippery seductress, known as the Viper.
Opening with an explosion, which could be a reference to the Atom bomb drop in Hiroshima, the trailer shows the historic moment when the superhero rescued a young soldier called Yashida from the blast.
Yashida scarred by the incident, is recognisable more than 60 years later by the facial mark, but now an old man, he hopes to entice Logan into sharing his mutant powers of healing.
But it wouldn’t be sharing, rather transferring his immortality, as he tells the Wolverine “the ability to heal can be past to another – let someone else shoulder the burden.”
But Wolverine’s reluctance to co-operate sparks an action-packed series of events, with the deadly Viper behind most of the carnage.
Like a femme fatale from a Dashiell Hammett novel, the reptilian villain can be seen luring the Wolverine into sexual submission, using her venom to incapacitate his healing abilities.
Filling the shoes of the blonde bombshell with bite is Svetlana Khodchenkova, a Russian actress whose most notable Hollywood performance was in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Her snake-like features are highlighted throughout the trailer, from a slithering tongue to the ability to shed her skin, where in one scene Viper can be seen giving herself a chemical peel that you definitely wouldn’t get in a beauty salon.
Calling herself “a chemist, a capitalist and a viper”, the villain isn’t the only bad guy Wolverine has to battle.
The Silver Samurai makes his first appearance in a Marvel movie, a mutant whose alter-ego is Kenuichio Harada, the illegitimate son of Yashida.
With the power to charge almost anything, the samurai is able to slice through any known substance except adamantium, the alien metal encasing the Wolverine’s entire skeleton.
But Logan is not alone in his battle, with a red-headed Japanese mutant called Yukio (played by Rila Fukushima) who can see the future on his side, and a potential new love interest.
Directed by James Mangold, The Wolverine will be released on 26 July in UK and US cinemas. – Dailymail.
