Jail term for theft of US$4

had pleaded guilty to a count of theft when magistrate Mr Obedience Matare imposed the sentence.
Chasara had an additional 10-day jail sentence suspended on condition he restituted Constable Sophia Chihuri the sum of US$4 by the end of this month. Chasara’s theft charge arose on October 23 when he visited Magunje Police Station to report a case of assault.
When he left the station for Magunje Growth Point, Cst Chihuri who was manning the gate to the police station asked him if he would come back.
The court heard that she told him she was looking for someone to buy her a plate of sadza from the shops.
Chasara indicated that he would come back in a few moments to finalise his assault report. Cst Chihuri handed him a US$5 note for a plate of sadza that cost US$1.
Chasara sent someone with the sadza while he remained behind squandering the change on booze.
Chasara was only arrested three days later while waiting for a Nicholas Zakaria show to kick off at Magunje Inn.
Mr Webster Dimingo prosecuted.
